Buy now or wait? A simple decision framework

Waiting can produce a lower price, but it can also create inconvenience or force a rushed replacement later.

Measure urgency

A failed essential item and an optional upgrade should not use the same timing rule.

Separate predictable from speculative discounts

Known seasonal patterns or scheduled model changes are different from hoping for an unknown future sale.

Value the time without the product

Delaying a useful purchase has an opportunity cost even when the sticker price later falls.

Set a decision date

A fixed review date prevents endless monitoring for a perfect price that may never appear.
