How to use product reviews without letting them make the decision

Reviews are useful for finding recurring problems and real-world patterns, but star averages can hide important context.

Look for repeated themes

A consistent issue across many detailed reviews matters more than one dramatic story.

Check use case

A complaint may be irrelevant if the reviewer used the product in a way very different from your intended use.

Watch incentives and selection bias

Some reviewers received products, discounts or invitations, while very happy and very unhappy customers may post more often than average users.

Verify important claims elsewhere

Use reviews to generate questions, then confirm critical specifications, warranty or compatibility points with stronger sources.
